Two envoys of the Dalai Lama returned to India on Friday after spending several weeks in China to improve relations between the exiled Tibetan leader and the Beijing government.
The envoys, Lodi Gyaltsen Gyari and Kelsang Gyaltsen, briefed Tibetan Prime Minister Samdong Rinpoche, but will not announce any specifics about the trip until the Dalai Lama returns from a tour of North and Central America on Oct. 11.
"The details will only be made public once the envoys have briefed the Dalai Lama and the Tibetan parliament-in-exile," said Thupten Samphal, an official of the exiled government the Dalai Lama and his followers established in northern India after fleeing from Chinese troops in 1959.
Beijing accuses the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, of waging a campaign for Tibet's independence, but the Dalai Lama has said he wants only more autonomy for the region in order to preserve its religion and culture. |
